Mathew is born during the “Great Fires,” when the tectonic plates shifted and unleashed massive volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and deadly radiation from the collapsing ozone layer, nearly wiping out humanity. After his mother dies, eighteen‑year‑old Mathew is left alone in the Nevada desert inside the self‑sufficient greenhouse built by NASA and the U.S. government for his parents, both genetic biologists. His parents eventually succumb to radiation poisoning, but not before perfecting their super‑hybrid trees. Needing more supplies to continue his parents’ work, Mathew crosses the barren, lifeless desert to the town of Laughlin, Nevada. On his second trip he discovers signs of survivors, along with a note asking him to rescue them. He finds a girl and her younger brother and brings them to safety, but is forced to kill their older stepbrother in the process. Fleeing back to the greenhouse with the two survivors, Mathew and Samantha soon fall in love. But the stepfather and remaining stepbrother eventually track them down — the stepfather driven by obsession, and the stepbrother seeking revenge for his brother’s death. The greenhouse is an impenetrable fortress until the well runs dry. Now the stage is set for a final confrontation: will evil prevail, or will Mathew and Samantha earn their chance at a happy ending.
